22 CENTURY WORLD'S MAGIC TRAFFIC BOLLARD KEY RING 安全島燈鎖匙扣

In 1973, the Public Works Department of Hong Kong (which was later split into multiple departments in 1982, including the Highways Department) began trialing various traffic safety measures. Among these was the introduction of the second-generation "Safety Island Lightbox" from the United Kingdom. It is highly likely named the "Morrison Light" to honor the man who introduced it—Morrison, a Senior Police Officer of the Traffic Branch at the time.

The defining feature of this new lightbox was its switch to lower-cost plastic materials. With lightbulbs housed inside the plastic shell, the entire unit illuminated at night, allowing drivers to see it from any direction. Being both affordable and highly effective, it received widespread praise during its trial phase. Another major breakthrough was the adoption of international standard traffic symbols, replacing cumbersome text descriptions with arrows, allowing drivers to make split-second driving decisions more rapidly.

Reports from that era state that the first batch of trial devices appeared on Garden Road, Nathan Road, and To Kwa Wan Road, featuring two distinct styles. Interestingly, the iconic "large head" design commonly seen today never actually existed in the UK. This unique shape was likely the "improvement" mentioned in old newspapers back then, making it a truly homegrown Hong Kong design.

Unnoticed by many, the "Morrison Light" has faithfully guarded Hong Kong’s traffic safety for over 40 years. Having weathered decades of storms, these lights are now drawing closer to retirement. Next time you are out on the streets, take a moment to appreciate these precious pieces of "local traffic heritage."

To preserve this valuable local memory, Ding Dong has specially used the "Shrink Ray" to scale down the safety island light and refreshed it with the "Time Cloth." We hope you will love and support this creation!
